PROJECT ENVIRONMENT
Osijek is the fourth largest city of Croatia and it lies on the river Drava. http://tzosijek.com/component/option,com_frontpage/Itemid,1/lang,english/ We have approximately 100.000 citizens. The city is very well connected with the capital Zagreb, Budapest (Hungary), Belgrade (Serbia) and Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina). Transportation in the city is possible via tram, bus, or bike. We are very well known for our 17 parks.
The largest park is in the centre of the city and on the way to the old part called "Tvrda" (Fortress) which has schools, universities, museums and nightlife. There are around 15 000 young people in the city who, due to the difficult economical situation are not employed and have a lot of free time.
Although our city offers a large number of free-time activities (sport fields and objects, bars and disco clubs, pools, theatre, cinemas, galleries, activities based outside of schools, sport clubs), but that's based on commercialization and consummation and less on providing space and equipment for new ideas for them to create, concept, follow through and evaluate.
The lack of care and opportunities for marginalized persons and persons with invalidity has as a result creation of social ghetto for those groups of youth. A need has arisen to give them a chance to find and show their capacity.
To make them less consumers and more creators. Also there is a growing problem of alcohol and drug abuse by young people and children, which is illegal (in our space, alcohol is not allowed). Nevertheless, our work is a constant challenge about positive change and it is important for us that the volunteers are active listeners and enjoys spending time with young people and children, because he/she will be accepted as a member of staff by our members.
PROPOSED ACTIVITIES
Our members are activists in our community and they are open for learning new knowledge how to improve our sorundings. The volunteer will have a chance to learn about our country, culture, people and other, according to his/hers interests. The volunteers will be living in a suitable apartment with a kitchen, near the Youth Centre. They will be responsible to cook for themselves. There is a possiblity that they will share room/living space with a person from the same sex. The role of the volunteer is to be a "link" between his/her community and our community, to have an opportunity to learn and to give/share that chance with our members.
The volunteers will have a 35hour working week and vacation according the EU rules about EVS. Activities which the volunteers can do in the afternoon working hours are: - Help with Web administration - For this activity, it is desirable that the volunteer knows how to operate a computer and has knowledge of using the internet.
The point of this activity is to promote the work of our organization and members and to create new connections. There will be a gallery on the web-site, and the volunteer will be given a chance to take pictures and publish them. giving information to the community: through e-mails, or on the spot about the "youth in action" programme). - an opportunity to write a weekly blog and that way stay a link for all involved. - creative workshops, (creating masks, poi, creating video awareness programmes), - educational workshops and design of promo materials, - socializing within the youth club and animation games, - helping organizing local events for the City of Osijek, etc.
Activities which the volunteers can do in the morning working hours are:
- cooperation with a sports gym (gymnastics with age 3-16) ,
- 3 times 2 hours per week
- Kindergarten ( children from the age of 6 months to 6 years)
- 3 times 2 hours per week
-Cooperation with the dog asylum,
- 2 times per week including Saturday.
Language class:
- The language course will be provided by a member of our organization, at first intensive and then periodically. If the volunteers decide to cooperate with the our partners: kindergarten, dog asylum and sports gym, they will have adequate and constant supervision by employed staff/professionals.
VOLUNTEER'S PROFILE
We do not have a specific profile that we are looking for, but we ask for a person that understands responsibility and is interested to work with young people, children and dogs. It would be good if the volunteer is creative, has a little experience in group work. The volunteers should have at least average knowledge of English, because our members know only that foreign language, or a Slavic language. Also, it is important that the volunteer is able to work in a middle size city in Eastern Croatia.
TARGET
The goal of this project is to give opportunity to young people from Europe to meet and work with youth of South Eastern Europe. The volunteers will have the opportunity to be directly involved in programs with youth and children groups, from different ethnic, confessional and cultural background, in Osijek, the main city of east side of Croatia. Through voluntary service and non formal education, s/he will get opportunities to learn more about the social integration and active participation in this part of Europe. With that, s/he will have the opportunity to show by his/her example the benefits of volunteering and learning about other cultures, through the European spirit. The involvement of the volunteer in the work with youth programs, with children and youth from families with social and economic problems, will show their solidarity for the social and economic problems of the people of South East Europe, and with that, s/he cares about the future of this part of Europe.
HOST ORGANISATION
Since the founding of Youth Centre for non-formal education -Creators not Consumers (CnC), in 2003, we are oriented towards creation of opportunities for youth to grow and adapt to the upcoming changes. By that goal, we have developed a program of active participation of youth to ensure the rising of their awareness, in short, to prepare them to become youth of Europe with all the benefits and responsibilities. We, at the CnC with our different contents, workshops and programs offer the children and the youth the possibility to positively reaffirm and find themselves. We guide them not by solving their problems, but by teaching them how to solve those problems themselves and gain the respect of others. Besides our competent personnel (staff of six) , who with their experience achieve results we have a large number of youth that can contribute to our goals. At the moment, we have 10 local volunteers that are conducting workshops and field work with other youth in our community. Our working hours are quit different then most. It is always in the afternoon and evening. Monday till Friday the office works from 14h to 18h. Monday till Friday the Education/Info section and youth club works from 18h to 22h. On weekends and holidays we are closed. Now we have more then 650 members and on regular days, the Youth Centre has between 30-50 visitors. When there are organized special activities and programmes then there are more members and volunteers involved. We must point out that our Youth Centre is a "no drug and no alcohol" place. This rule is applied for all members, visitors, staff and volunteers. On the national and international level our work is oriented toward implementation of our national program for youth development and development of active citizenship. Also, we are creating opportunities for networking, capacity building and exchanges for youth, in the partnership with NGOs from SEE and EU through the YOUTH in ACTION Programme.
